Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
